The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU-SVM) seeks a distinguished academic leader for the position of Head of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences. Appointment will be at the level of Full Professor with indefinite tenure.

The LSU-SVM ranks in the top third of veterinary schools in the United States in funding from the National Institutes of Health with approximately $40 million in extramural awards while the Department of Pathobiological Sciences is currently ranked first in NIH funding on the LSU Baton Rouge campus. The Department provides teaching and training to DVM, MS and PhD candidates in the areas of bacteriology, epidemiology, immunology, parasitology, pathology, and virology. Graduate and DVM training benefit from robust caseloads at the adjoining Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL).

The Department collaborates extensively in Louisiana to advance its educational and service missions. Collaborators include the Tulane National Primate Research Center, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, the National Hansen’s Disease Center and the two LSU Health Science Centers located in New Orleans and Shreveport, LA.

Research in the department leads to MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical and Veterinary Medical Sciences for both DVM and non-DVM graduate students. Graduate courses are offered in all disciplines associated with the department. Basic and applied research is conducted in the areas of molecular pathogenesis, disease processes, public health, infectious diseases, and host response to bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic pathogens. Department members also train DVM’s for specialty board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists through a three-year residency program.

We are seeking an individual with a PhD, DVM, VMD, MD, or equivalent degree in an appropriate discipline with a history of continuing extramural funding success and accomplishments commensurate with the title of full professor and approval as a member of the LSU Graduate Faculty. The successful applicant should demonstrate an interest in graduate and professional education, and an appreciation for the multifaceted mission of the department, which includes basic and applied research in infectious disease, anatomic and clinical pathology, and collaboration with the LADDL, VTH and the other SVM academic departments (Comparative Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Clinical Sciences). The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively as a writer and speaker at all levels of the university, industry and private sectors. They must be strongly committed to graduate student training and recruiting, the professional development of faculty, staff and students, professional (DVM) student teaching, and should appreciate the value of diversity and inclusiveness. The Head should have the capacity to lead in a model of shared faculty governance, and be innovative strategically with an interest in further enhancing collaborations both intramurally and extramurally.

Interested applicants should upload a cover letter including a brief description of previous leadership experience, a CV with a full list of publications and teaching experience, and the names and contact details of three academic references to their online application (link above). Any questions can be directed to: Joel D. Baines, VMD PhD at jbaines@lsu.edu. Review of applications will begin on February 4, 2019.

  • LSU IS COMMITTED TO DIVERSITY AND IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY/EQUAL ACCESS EMPLOYER.
