The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University seeks an experienced veterinary anatomist, to team-teach veterinary anatomy (both large and small animal) incorporating developmental anatomy principles to the students in the DVM curriculum. The position is offered at a faculty level (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) commensurate with their level of experience and is available beginning July 2019.
The faculty at the Cummings School has significant commitments to teaching in both the graduate and DVM professional curricula and participate in several areas of research, including neuroscience, immunology, stem cell, hepatology, cardio-oncology and infectious diseases.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant is expected to teach veterinary gross anatomy with a team of instructors. This person is expected to work with other course directors to develop an integrated anatomy course. The donation program at the Cummings School is the mainstay for provision of teaching specimens; the person is expected to embalm all donated small animal and some large animal carcasses for student dissections and prepare carefully dissected small and large animal anatomical specimens for use in labs. This time commitment includes a mixture of lectures and laboratories for the course, as well as helping with summer remediation. There would be some related activities such as preparation of prosections and assistance with embalming. The person will be working with a team that includes two other instructors and a full time Anatomy Lab Manager, who is be responsible for inventory, keeping the lab clean and organized and assistance in embalming. The balance of the appointment will be filled by contributions to the Cummings School research, departmental service, and/or clinical missions.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have training in and substantial experience teaching veterinary anatomy in the US or Canada, positive teaching evaluations and a commitment to teaching excellence. The individual must be familiar with embalming techniques. A DVM or equivalent degree is preferred, with strong consideration given to candidates who hold a PhD in any of the basic sciences specialties. The successful candidate will have experience in student-centered novel didactic methods and assessment formats, and, ideally, will have a scholarly record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. This person must possess effective communication skills and be able to work with diverse groups of stakeholders within the Cummings School.
